History
  • We trace our roots back to the Protestant Reformation led by Martin Luther in 1517 who influenced a Frenchman named John Calvin to shape a church in Geneva, Switzerland, that reached out to French and Scottish protestants and extends to our denomination:  The Presbyterian Church (USA).
  • Our church was formed by 16 Presbyterians who left Pendleton, SC, settled on the banks of the Black Warrior River and established this congregation in 1820.
  • The first building was erected on the present site in 1830.
  • Established Stillman College after the Civil War to train African-American pastors
  • Campus ministry outreach to the University campus has flourished since the 1940's
  • Current Sanctuary building completed in 1920 with renovation in 1952
  • Education facilities constructed in 1960 along with Westervelt-Warner Chapel
  • Began the Preschool outreach to families in 1975 along with radio/television broadcast of services
  • Local missions include founding church for The Community Soup Bowl, organizing for Caring Days for adult dementia day care, building numerous Habitat for Humanity homes, initiating church for Pastoral Counseling Center, and support for numerous local ministries.
  • World Missions Festival organized in the 1990's to support missionaries and fund mission teams to Brazil, Mexico, Haiti, Jamaica, Madagascar, Costa Rica and Kenya
  • In 2000 current renovation and addition of facilities were dedicated
  • History continues "For Christ from the heart of Tuscaloosa"
